Ancient Wisdom: June 2025

May 28, 2025

Better is a handful of serenity than two handfuls of toil and chasing after wind.
-Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) 4:6

This verse from Kohelet has always struck a chord with me, and it feels especially relevant this time of year. As summer begins, so many of us are caught between the pressure to "make the most" of every opportunity and the quiet longing for a little breathing room. Vacations. Kids home from school. Clergy transitions. Graduations. Family celebrations. For all the beauty and joy in this season, there's also a subtle anxiety that we have to do it all, or we might fall behind.

Kohelet offers a gentle but pointed reminder: more isn’t always better. Chasing every opportunity, hustling endlessly, or filling every gap in our calendar might look like success—but it can leave us spiritually and emotionally drained. Sometimes, the wise path is to embrace "a handful of serenity." To take less on. To choose stillness. To intentionally leave space for presence.

This is at the heart of values-based financial planning. It’s not just about accumulating more—it’s about aligning your resources with what matters most. It's budgeting for joy, not just obligation. It's building in time for rest, not just productivity. It's giving with intention, not just spending.

In a world that often celebrates hustle and excess, this verse invites us to redefine success. To see wisdom not in grasping with both hands, but in letting one hand remain open—to peace, to purpose, to being fully present.

As we emerge from Shavuot—a time of receiving wisdom and renewal—I invite you to pause. Breathe. Ask yourself: What might it look like to hold onto a little less this season—and to make room for more serenity?

Wishing you a season of contentment, clarity, and calm.
